School Streets for safer and healthier towns and cities
Significant increase in numbers of children being driven to school
In England, about 40% of primary school children and 25% of secondary school children are driven to school by car or van.
Traffic danger is the main reason cited by parents as to why they don’t allow their children to play outside near home or to walk or cycle to school. The figures speak for themselves: In 2023, 1,832 child pedestrians and children on bikes (0-16 years old) were killed or seriously injured on our streets.

School Streets make a difference
It is vital for local authorities to support schools in delivering their statutory duty to promote sustainable transport for the school run, as set out in the Education Act 1996.
Research shows that when a School Street is implemented, the number of children traveling on foot or by cycle, increases.
