Summary

Bikes for Business was an innovative behaviour change programme in South London. The aim of the project was to help make cargo bikes the mainstream solution for business freight in the area. Businesses were offered free impartial expert advice and one-off subsidies up to £1500 to support their switch from vans to cargo bikes.

This project is an extension and expansion of a first phase which ran for 18 months between between 2018 and 2020. This original phase demonstrated strong demand for cargo bike services and visibly increased the role of cargo bikes in the area.

This report summarises the results of the second phase of the project, which ran from Spring 2021 to Spring 2023. We engaged with more businesses and across a wider area than in the first phase.

The project was focused in the area around the Low Line corridors, which follow the Victorian railway viaducts East to West in Bankside, London Bridge and Bermondsey, and the viaduct heading South via Borough, Elephant & Castle and Walworth. This area was an optimum location to run this project due to the density of businesses, the presence of multiple cargo bike operators, and the issues of pollution and congestion.

The project was funded by Impact on Urban Health who are reducing the impact of freight as a source of air pollution in Southwark and Lambeth.
