Stakeholder Engagement and Consultation

Introduction

Understanding the needs and requirements of your local community is vital to creating and implementing effective and long-lasting placemaking projects. Across the UK we have a diverse and multicultural population, so ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard, is key.

At MP Smarter Travel, we’ve worked with local authorities across London to engage businesses, community groups and the general public to gather feedback and insights on a range of projects such as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, business freight and logistics and many other sustainable transport schemes. Following bespoke engagement plans, we communicate with stakeholders using everything from online surveys to door-to-door business engagement.

How we work

    • Define the scope of a comprehensive project that engages stakeholders to gather feedback. We then map out and classify relevant stakeholders (for example, local businesses, resident groups, community centres, places of worship and schools).
    • Create and implement a communications plan including emails, phone calls, in-person interviews, on street hotspot engagement and consultation events to engage the community.
    • Review all responses and provide a thematic analysis to identify common patterns in responses.
    • Provide a final report including key findings and recommendations.

Once the project has concluded, we can also provide ongoing support to implement any recommendations or to further develop outreach as needed.

    London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Following the borough’s four-year ‘Liveable Streets’ programme, we engaged with the local community at engagement events and hotspot locations to gather feedback. We then completed a thematic analysis of all responses detailing specific issues affecting those in the area, as well as more general perceptions of the scheme.

London Boroughs of Newham and Waltham Forest

After the introduction of two experimental cross-border Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) located in Newham and Waltham Forest, our consultants undertook detailed stakeholder mapping and community engagement with the communities in and around the LTNs. The feedback was instrumental in implementing a successful permanent scheme.

    • 372 key stakeholders identified
    • 12 hours of hotspot engagement
    • 450 leaflets distributed
    • 180 responses collected
    • 14 detailed responses from key stakeholders

    London Borough of Brent

Our team worked with six schools to co-design improvements to four Healthy School Streets across Brent. In our co-design workshops, we introduced the concept of school streets and their benefits, discussed sustainable and climate resilient elements which could be introduced on the streets and gave the school children a chance to design it themselves. We also ran a consultation event for local residents and stakeholders in the project area to discuss ideas and concerns.
